Align Your Wealth with Social Justice

Family Money Coaching

Family Money Coaching

A customized coaching program for families with wealth who are in conflict or confusion about wealth and want to make shared financial choices that center social justice.

Do you and your family member(s) need support in making a plan for your wealth? Do you disagree about what to do with it, or are aligned but need guidance and coaching to implement a plan? Do you want to ensure money will not negatively affect your family relationships?

I work with any configuration of family members who want help figuring out what to do with their wealth and want the process of making financial choices to bring them closer together.

While each family is unique and requires a customized approach, here are some examples of family coaching offerings:

Family foundation dynamics

Do you have a family foundation or donor-advised fund and need support navigating family dynamics?

I offer compassionate support and guidance for family members who need help clarifying their vision for the foundation, overcoming disagreements about the foundation, or who need support in navigating dual relationships of being both family members and colleagues. I also offer leadership coaching for younger trustees and board members who need support in building their confidence and clarity as emerging leaders in the foundation. I can also support those who need help figuring out how to navigate relationships with conservative family members. Note: I do not offer strategic planning or counsel on the logistics of running a foundation, but can happily refer you to those who offer this.

Navigating Conflicts about Wealth Redistribution & Inheritance with Your Parents

Do you have parents who you love but who disagree about what to do with your family’s wealth? Do you want facilitated support to address each of your concerns to find a way forward? Until we can openly be witnessed in our fears and concerns across generations, we will continue to be stuck and in conflict with one another. An aligned path forward with money- and more trusting and close relationships- can be made possible through facilitated support.

All family members will leave this coaching process with tools for better communication about money, a better understanding of each other’s fear and desires about money, and concrete next steps with money that take everyone’s needs into consideration.

Wealthy Siblings or Cousins Teaming Up for Wealth Redistribution

Siblings and cousins can play powerful roles as allies in the family. When you have a sibling or cousin who is also committed to social justice, you have a unique opportunity to work together as a team towards your vision for the family wealth. For some, your long and complicated histories can interfere with your ability to be a strong, unified team, as can discrepancies in the details of your political visions. Or perhaps you feel aligned and close to each other, but want support in clarifying and implementing the details of your plan.

Together, we will:

  • Explore where you are aligned and misaligned regarding your vision for what to do with your family’s wealth

  • Witness each other’s challenging emotions related to your family and money and get support holding that vulnerability with care

  • Have opportunities to amend past conflicts to heal and strengthen your relationship

  • For siblings, talk openly about unjust power dynamics within the family, such as favoritism, sexism, homophobia, birth order, etc – and set commitments about how to create more equity in the family

  • Clarify your shared vision and commitments for organizing your family, wealth redistribution, and any other questions about your plan for the family money

  • Decide if you want to create a shared giving plan

  • Strategize together on how to bring your family along with your in your wealth redistribution process

Family coaching will help you and your family members overcome money-related conflicts, clarify what you want to do with your wealth, and strengthen your relationships.

Family money coaching is a great fit for people in any of the following situations. You and your family member:

  • Politically progressive and interested in funding social justice

  • Want to ensure wealth does not interfere with your ability to be close to one another

Love one another and are committed to working on your relationships

  • Want to learn how to communicate more gracefully about money

  • Need guidance on finding an aligned vision for your wealth and support in executing it; perhaps you need support overcoming disagreements about what to do with the wealth

  • Need support in navigating relationships with more conservative family members

Family money coaching is not a great fit if:

  • You are trying to convince or coerce a family member to do coaching with you

  • You are not on speaking terms with each other

  • You do not want to get closer with each other

  • Your family member is conservative or fundamentally opposed to social justice

  • You want to do coaching to change your family member’s mind about their political beliefs

Pricing:

I use a tiered pricing structure for Family Coaching based on how much wealth you have access to, as I believe that we should pay more for services based on how much wealth we have access to, and because I want each client to feel like they are putting in a meaningful investment into this work. These fees include 90-120 minute sessions, access to my coaching materials, my feedback on your worksheets, and access to me through email.

Because family money coaching is so customized, when we meet I will put together a proposal about rates and length of commitment. Here is a range of pricing:

  • Poor and working class families: $5-$50/mo (you decide)

  • Access to over $300k: $1300/mo

  • Redistribution tier 1 - Sponsor money coaching for a poor/working class couple/family: $2600

  • Redistribution tier 2 - Sponsor money coaching for two poor/working class couples/families: $3900/mo

Interested? To learn more, you and your family member(s) can sign up for a 55-minute call, which includes a complimentary coaching session, and learn more about the program. This will be a zero pressure environment—we will only work together if it feels like a great fit to both of us. I work with clients in any time zone over video or phone.

PS- Do you have a foundation or donor-advised fund? I can also provide support as you navigate any questions regarding the logistics, strategy, or systems in place for those giving vehicles.
